Sci-Fi / Fantasy Books By Black Authors | Lex Reads

Happy

I wanted to dedicate a video about science fiction but of course edition. Now, this is a genre that I don’t read at all but after researching, I might just get into them. I just scratch the surface with researching this genre because I know that we have so much more. #sciencefiction #blackliterature #blackauthors #blackbooktuber #fantasybooks #sciencefictionnovel #scifibooks

OMG the broken earth series is a gem won the Hugo award for all 3 in the series!

I really enjoyed the Broken Earth trilogy but SciFi is the genre I read them most. It’s like earth is alive, magic and plate tectonics. It’s not scary.

You read Parable of the Sower but not Parable of the Talents. It took me years to start reading sci-fi but I have found the to not be scary at all.

Psst…there is an Octavia Bulter graphic novel for Kindred and Parable of the Sower.

The Broken Earth trilogy is an acquired taste. There is a sort of earth magic. Not scary, very intiguing, enjoyable. Amazing writing, almost biblical.

Great list! Check out Walter Mosely and Nnedi Okorafor, as well.

Axiom by Kalari Walker is my latest Sci-fi obsession. She's working on the sequel right now.

The Fifth Season is about what happens after an apocalypse, what happened before it, and about how it affects dysfunctional families.

It has an unusual narrative style using the first person, the second person, and the third person.

It definitely can get a little intense at times. I'd say the most intense part is the coerced reproduction

Samuel Delaney is related to the two Delany sisters who were interviewed for the book "Having Our Say"
Here are a few other authors of science fiction: L.A. Banks (aka Leslie Esdaile), Jayde Brooks, Nicole Glover, Nnedi Okorafor, Amanda Joy, Tananarive Due, and the book "The Darker Mask" a collection of short stories, don't overlook Walter Mosley.

Thanks for this video! Science Fiction and Fantasy books are my favorites. N K Jemisin is a great writer who was influenced by Octavia E Butler. If you want to learn more about her, Ibi Zoboi wrote Star Child, a mixed media Butler biography.

Hi. Many years ago I met Toni Morrison. I was embarrassed to tell her that I found her writing hard to understand. She told me to just read it and don't overthink about it. So I just read it. I didn't reread sentences attempting to understand or interpret what she was saying. I grasped very little. The second time around it clicked, not all of it but more. The third time I was like … Oh Shit! I get it! Her books are written for US, you can tell and feel it. Try this method and a light bulb moment will happen.😊

Kindred was so good. Octavia put her foot in that one. I also recommend Blood Child and other stories from Octavia.

Hi Lex, love your t-shirt! Yes I love Caribbean authors as well they are great story tellers. As my mom was from the Caribbean and could tell a good story. I have somewhat inherited her talent 😀. I would classify their story telling as folklore. Thank you for sharing you are definitely educating me. I feel the same about Toni Morrison her writing goes over my head so I avoid her. But I will definitely dab a little into science fiction by black authors just to add to my palette.
