The Chester Himes novels feature Coffin Ed Johnson and Gravedigger Jones. The 1970 movie, "Cotton Comes To Harlem" is probably the best screen adaptation of one of his books to date. It was directed by Ossie Davis and starred Godfrey Cambridge and Raymond St. Jacques as the detectives. Calvin Lockhart steals the show as the flashy, shady preacher, Deke O'Malley. The sequel, COME BACK CHARLESTON BLUE, was not as strong an adaptation which was based on the novel, THE HEAT'S ON. The book is very strong. Others in the series are BLIND MAN WITH A Pistol and The Big Gold Dream.
