Back in downtown . The Basketball game ended with the Raptors suffering another close loss. exited Quantum Interface Technology’s corporate VIP box along with his two sons and rode the elevator to the concourse level, where he planned to pick up a couple of jerseys at the merch shop for them.
“Yow, Everton!” a voice called out and when he turned to look who it was, he didn’t recognize the man calling him until they were just about face to face and the man had removed his designer shades.
“Oh shit, Wayne. What’s up man?” they greeted with a clasp of right hands and a bro hug. “what’s with the……?” Everton stopped short while gesturing to his own chin to bring attention to Wayne’s large beard.
“You know; it’s just style, man,” he replied and they both laughed. “What’s up with you, man? I hear that you’re a big boss now, living out in in a big house?” he continued.
“Where’d you hear that?” Everton asked while glancing at Wayne’s female companion who was lingering in the background. She was stunningly beautiful with long straight hair and she wore a short fur collard jacket over a tight black leather outfit that exposed her whole chest, save for the area around her nipples. Everton wanted to bar his boys from looking but decided to let the uncomfortable situation play out instead.
“Come on man; it’s no secret. Everyone sees you on TV next to that trillionaire, Ian Phillips. You’re his personal bodyguard, right,” Wayne stated to bring Everton’s attention back to him?
“Nah, not exactly. His real bodyguard is invisible unless there’s trouble. I run his back-up team.”
“Yeah, that’s right. I heard he has some sort of AI system. I don’t know about that shit. It’ll never replace real guns and muscles.”
“Don’t sleep on it. Anyway, what are you up to now? Everton asked. “I haven’t seen you since our club days. After I picked up those assault charges, I had to quit Bouncing and lay low for a few years. Eventually, I got into security work.”
“I run my own security business like you, dude,” Wayne replied.
“Oh yeah? Where?”
“You know the Rapper, 6-Side-Ice? I run his whole security team. He was at court side all game and the two guys with him work for me…. I’m just here enjoying the game like you, like real bosses should,” Wayne laughed again.
“No shit?” Everton replied.
“I’m dead serious…. Hey! Word on the street is that you guys are looking for people.”
“Yeah, we’re always looking for dedicated and reliable people,”
“I’ve got lots of guys looking for legitimate work. Put some of them on and let’s work together. We could run the city like we used to run the clubs in the old days.”
“They’ve gotta be clean. No criminal record. Ian Phillips won’t allow it otherwise. You know what; here’s my business card. Call me in a few days and we can discuss it,” Everton replied.
Wayne turned his attention to Everton’s two boys. “So, these are your boys, uh?” he stated rhetorically.
“Yeah, their twelve and ten.”
“Hey, your dad used to be a beast back in the day, you know. Breaking arms and legs left and right with those muscles of his. Now he’s acting like a real punk.”
“Hey, watch it man,” Everton interjected while stepping in between Wayne and his sons. “I’ve gotta go, man,” Everton stated while taking the shoulders of both sons to lead them toward the exit.
“I’m sure you remember that I always handled my business back in the day. The only difference now is, I have money so no-one is untouchable,” Wayne shouted.
Everton stopped. “Now I remember why I drifted away from you and Devon fifteen years ago,” he stated angrily. “You guys couldn’t get over that fake gangster crap.”
“See you around, – – – punk!” Wayne replied. He then flipped the business card onto the ground and walked away. Before his female companion joined him, she picked up the business card and stuck it into her purse.
