Butler's Xenogenesis helped me understand chattel slavery better than non-fiction ever came close to doing.

I am a White man, and dislike SJWs and wokeness. I believe in Humanism! Do really a shame to actually want to know people from other continents rather just "collect them", or judge by them based on how different they lifestyle than ours?

They credit Octavia Butler with both Kindred and Earthsea, Earthsea is by Ursula Le Guin. You really need to fire your reseracher or at least double check the credited author as it is an insult to both to these great female writers to bundle their work as a single entity. It also ruins an otherwise really good video as it tells the audience that not only have you not read the book mentioned but that you couldn't even go so far as reading the covers of the books mentioned

Lol did she say Earthsea was by Butler? WRONG!!

I really love this presentation style with the interviews and visual aides, and running through the notable authors and books in a genre. I would love to see more though I hope PBS studios would provide a little more assistance to ensure that the sound and graphic quality were of a high quality.

Marginally related: A Science Fiction series that does have black characters: Speaker for the Dead takes place mostly on a planet colonized primarily by Brazilians. And so the majority of characters happen to be black.
The next book that I can think of that I have read that is more authentically African is The No. 1 Ladies' Detective agency, which I now realize was written by a British man who taught law in Botswana.
Now I need to read some Octavia Butler or something. There are areas of science fiction that I have not read.

I am in love with Science Fiction and I think one of the final comments of the video "a future where black people exist – because alot of scifi doesnt have that – we've all mysteriously left" is such a great point.

I'm here for this but I thought I heard Earthsea listed as a Butler title. Am I missing something? Admittedly I've read more Le Guin than Butler.

I wish this listed in the description the books they talked about in video so that I could more easily read them

'state violence'. please, tell me in wich african country a black woman would have the resources to write and publish sci fi books and to be so… an euphemism for 'fat', please? and the hero´s journey is being reinvented and perverted all the time. BREAKIND BAD is one of the (if not THE) most important tv dramas and walts journey is about becoming a… monster.

This is pretty cool, I'm usually not into sci-fi. I mostly read fantasy… ok fine, I reread harry potter… XD
But I think I should give some of these books a try.
