LOVED THIS SO MUCH!!! I keep seeing people recommending Binti so I might have to give it a try. Slay is another one I really want to read because I love when they include videogames in books

@davidelrockafella2870

black empire by george schuyler. Hard book to find, almost impossible. If you read it, you would understand why

I did a whole report on Afrofuturism for a class once–such an fascinating genre and one I'll be using this reading list to get to know more of!

I have Binti on my TBR. Dark Matter sounds great! The two non-fiction books sound interesting. I have Slay on my TBR, I just saw on Instagram you were reading it haha (unless you have finished it by now!).

I would read the absolute ish out of your dissertation, as well as the wonderful book suggestions it will be based off – can't fully understand an academic paper without first understanding the source material, after all! Thank you!

What a great list of books. I read my first Octavia E Butler book last month (albeit in graphic novel form) and really want to read more from her. I think I need to read Binti and Slay. I've heard so many amazing things about both.

I loved Binti! Just read it at the start of this month and I can’t wait to get the rest of the series. I’ve gotta add those others to my TBR as well.

Thanks for sharing and all the best for your dissertation. I look forward to hearing how it develops.

I totally resonate with the starting a lot of books and not finishing them… I am soooooo in that space right now.

I have heard of afrofuturism but I'm not 100% certain what does and does not qualify. So I'm basically just trying to read broadly and listen to how others use the term to get a better read on it.

Your dissertation sounds so interesting! Good luck! I heard about Black God’s Drum on Twitter and it definitely picked my interest. I didn’t know Riot Baby was afrofuturism! The Gilda Stories has been on my wishlist for a looooong time – it seems AMAZING! Can’t wait to hear your thoughts on the non-fiction ones!

@godslittlestidiot2984

This came at just the right time. I am SO into Afrofuturism right now. Really anything Black centric that really focuses on Black culture.

So many books that I've added to my tbr from this video! I'm so jealous of your dissertation haha, I'm sure it's going to be a lot of hard work but it also sounds fun! My undergrad dissertation was on offshore windfarms… it wasn't great. Postgrad was much better haha

Sounds so great! I so want to read Wild Seed and The Chaos. I read Slay recently and really enjoyed it. Love afrofuturism and how expansive it can be, was in a workshop a couple years ago where after learning about it they let us just be creative and imagine a world together and its so dope the many different creative things folks came up with.

@readingwithreeses1274

Sounds like a fascinating dissertation topic! I've read the Binti trilogy, but I'll have to check out the others. Chaos sounds particularly interesting.

Your dissertation topic sounds so intriguing – I hope it goes well! I have a few of the books you mentioned on my TBR that I'm hoping to read in the next month or so, such as Binti and Slay. The others on this list sound really interesting as well so I'll definitely be looking into them and giving them a try. This was a wonderful video!

I am envious of your dissertation. It sounds positively amazing – I hope you're able to enjoy your work on it. Wild Seed has a great cover and you've picked out some books I've been interested in reading previously. I read Riot Baby earlier this year and will be reading it again before the year is out because it's one that keeps lingering in my mind.

Your dissertation sounds absolutely amazing, good luck with writing! Also, I loved Binti and Slay! And I’m going to be picking up my first Octavia Butler for the Octavia Butler slow read and I’m excited to finally read one of her books. Riot Baby is also on my TBR! Such a great list!

@thetbrdiaries

Good luck with your dissertation!
I've either read or am interested pretty much everything on this list, I really need to make a point of looking for afrofuturism in books as it's definitely something I enjoy – especially The Black God's Drums, I need a full-length novel from P. Djeli Clark!

@myreseanndel

YES! i have read some of these and the rest are on my tbr!!! Octavia E Butler is one of my favorite authors!!!

@EMenozzi

Binti and The Black God's Drums are both great! I also have Riot Baby on my list to read. Have you read anything by Nicky Drayden? Prey of Gods was really good, and I just bought Escaping Exodus. You may also want to try David Mogo Godhunter by Suyi Davies Okungbowa. I also just bought BodyMinds Reimagined (non-fiction) by Sami Schalk because it sounded interesting. Good luck with your dissertation!
