Ytasha Womack – Afrofuturism: Imagination and Humanity
26 February 2017 – De Brakke Grond, Amsterdam, The Netherlands

The use of the imagination for self-development and social change is one of the greatest tenets of Afrofuturism. Ytasha Womack will explore the resilience encouraged through the championing of the imagination, the tensions that arise through embracing hope, the separation of humanity from itself through the creation of the called race, and the power of storytelling.

Ytasha L. Womack is an author, filmmaker, independent scholar and dancer. She is author of the award winning book Afrofuturism: The World of Sci Fi & Culture. She is one of the leading Afrofuturist scholars and travels the world lecturing on the imagination. Her other include Post , the Afrofuturist series Rayla 2212, and Beats, Rhymes and Life: What We Love & Hate About Hip Hop. Ytasha is in preproduction for her film Bar Star City, which follows a group of intergalactic bar patrons. Other films include the upcoming romantic comedy Couples Night (Screenwriter), The Engagement (Director), and Love Shorts (Writer/Producer). Ytasha currently resides in Chicago.

Imaginations are being stolen from our children early in their childhoods because of violence and racism. Those children didn’t even have an imagination because they were too focused on not being harmed through violence.

As a sci go comic book kid from the 70’s it’s about time Africans
Start focusing on the future. The tremendous energy of the past, good and bad can be used to build a fantastic future, but we have to create that future intentionally . Very happy😛

Love to see Chicago represented in Afro Futurism. A poor neighborhood on the South side of Chicago is where I was exposed to ideas that took me out of my here and now to think about time and place beyond where we were as kids. My exposure to Afrofuturism started with Parliament Funkadelic and Sun Ra… it gave birth to my imagination and love of Sci Fi.

LOVE, such a clear way to explain a concept that is seemingly more complex but in reality it's just a platform to launch our imagination!

If you look at the work of Earth, Wind & Fire, and Parliament/Funkadelik, those were great examples of Afrofuturism. Only difference between the two groups is that Earth, Wind & Fire were dramatical while Parliament/Funkadelik were comical but they both talk about pride, and uplift.

Sun Ra's performance art as a being has parallels with Janelle Monaé's alter ego performance art as The Archandroid.
