Krista, I’m still catching up on your videos and loving your book picks! MyTBR is growing and growing! I’m wondering if you would do a shelf spotlight of memoirs that you love? Thanks! Amy 😊
Just finished reading In Five years by Rebecca Serle. Not sure if you have read it already I absolutely loved it highly recommend it ❤🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟
I got From Scratch from my library recently keen to read it soon.
All the book recommendations by black authors are liberal. Black authors that are conservative get discriminated the most so until we are equal in recommendations then I can't really join support black authors movement.
I read Kindred this year and I was blown away! It was my first Octavia Butler novel and I think it's a great one to start with for her as an author. It was almost painful to read at times, but it was one of the most impactful books I've ever read! ~Laura
Kindred has been in my general TBR for two years, I need to read it very soon since it is just my type of book 🤗 Just Mercy will probably be in my non fiction november tbr 😉 Have you read the Color Purple, it was a good historical fiction 😉
I enjoyed Silver Sparrow more than American Marriage. The audiobook is phenomenal! I also got The Vanishing Half in my BOTM and I’m very excited to get to it 😊
Loved seeing all your books!
Just Mercy was also my favorite book of 2019 and one of my favs of all time!!! Loved the Sun Does Shine too! I def want to read homegoing, kindred, and underground railroad soon. Americanah is one of my favorite books of all time!
I’m reading Kindred now and I am LOVING it. It’s so good! I’ve gotten some more good recommendations, thanks for sharing Krista!
😀
Hey Krista ! I loved Just Mercy. I also really enjoyed the Nickel Boys………..I think that you will love it too. I actually read that book in one day because I just could not put it down. The Sun Does Shine, Homegoing, and the Girl with the louding Voice are all on my book shelf and I need to pick those up to read.Thank you for doing this video and highlighting Black Authors. I think that sometimes people just need somewhere to start so that they can expand their reading. Before finding your channel…….. I didn't know of many other authors outside of black authors. I had a one Jodi Picoult, a few Stephen King and James Patterson books and a few by Christian authors and thats it. Now I have "TONS" of books from all authors, I have found a great love for Historical fiction , and I am addicted to Middle Grade. You are such a bright light …….and I really do appreciate the amazing content that you share on your channel. Its like one big family here! Thanks for sharing…..stay safe……..hugs….Alisha
A handful of years ago I was watch a TV show. They were showing a case of a gentleman that was arrested, charged with a crime and serious yo and down of his innocence. I don't recall the crime but he was found guilty. He wasn't happy, but didn't act hysterical about it, although he asked the judge if he could ask the court a question. The judge allowed. He had asked him if they ever come up with a way to test his blood or something like that would they please allow him to use it to prove his innocence. The judge and others giggled and laughed about it, he said sure, knowing this was never going to happen. Time goes on, and the prisoner comes across a story about DNA and starts researching. Learning more about it, he is wanting to be tested to prove his innocence. I think he was declined, thinking the price, but that judge had said so. Getting a lawyer, and discovers that yes the judge did state that, they had to allow it. Months later his innocence is discovered. I've always wondered if it had ever become a book.
Krista, I appreciate the way you handled the Book Outlet and BOM controversy with such class and grace.
I watched just mercy didn't. It it was a book
I LOVED Silver Sparrow so much. Read it a long time ago but I still remember the feelings it left me with. The Mothers was also amazing, and of course Americanah was terrific too. I really need to read Just Mercy, I should have gotten to it a long time ago! A few fiction recommendations: What We Lose by Zinzi Clemmons, The Star Side of Bird Hill by Naomi Jackson, 32 Candles by Ernessa T. Carter, A Kind of Freedom by Margaret Wilkerson Sexton. And a few nonfiction recs are Sister Citizen by Melissa Harris-Perry, Help Me to Find My People by Heather Andrea Williams, and The Warmth of Other Suns by Isabel Wilkersons (that last one is a long one but so worth it)
Ashley from Bookish Realms has recommendations on her channel, one of them which I am adding to my wishlist is Good Feminism by Mikki Kendall. Sounds interesting.
By the way I picked up Until Tomorrow Mr. Marsworth, I should be getting it Wednesday. You sold me on that book, it's going to be one of those that I will probably cry at the end because it was that good. My mom has told me about what the country was like during Vietnam, she was in her 20's during the '70's. I am speculating the older gentleman was in WWII and is alone due to the death of his wife, almost reminds me of the movie Up only different. Can't wait to read it. Thank you for that recommendation, I'm always looking to read and add to my ever growing library. 🙂
Oh you have some interesting sounding books on your list. I just read Just Mercy a few weeks ago and was blown away. All Americans need to read this eye opening book!
The Mothers is really good – don’t worry about the format it really didn’t bother me at all and I’m usually not great with odd perspectives 😊
I may have mentioned this book before, and it is not fiction but reads like it, if you know what I mean, and it’s The Black Rose by Tananarive Due. It is about the first black female millionaire in the US. Starts In 1870s through at least 1916. I’m still reading it but it is so good. She developed a line of hair care for black women (that’s not a spoiler!). At this point for me it’s a 4. So inspiring and brave at such a difficult time for women and Blacks to try to better themselves. Anyway, as I say, it really reads like fiction so you might want to take a peek at least. 💕
Krista, my twin, you’ve given some great suggestions! Definitely will have to pick up Kindred and Homegoing! I read and saw Just Mercy, which were both just fabulous. I have Sing Unburied Sing in my TBR hopefully this month. The Mothers sounds curious. I’m with you on that one, a little on the fence. I did just get a The Vanishing Half and can’t wait to read it also. I just wanted to comment that I really appreciate and understand your position on Book Outlet and BOTM. I wasn’t aware of the BOTM controversy so I’ll have to check it out. But you are a very thoughtful and gracious woman, and I’m know you will do whatever is most comfortable for you. That’s all we can do, right? But sharing your comments, as I said, was appreciated. Happy Reading this week! I have to finish up a couple book club reads before I can start any of the above, dang it! ☺️📖
Oh, and not sure if it's historical fiction (maybe?), but. I love love love Their Eyes Were Watching God.
Remembered by Yvonne Battle-Felton
Really enjoyed this historical fiction last year
I just bought Silver Sparrow and Brit Bennett's books, The Mothers and The Vanishing Half.
I’ve really been interested in reading Kindred. It sounds super interesting!
Jason Reynolds writes some good middle grade books. I also enjoyed Brown Girl Dreaming by Woodson and Roll of Thunder, Hear my Cry by Taylor.
Hi! I'm so glad you loved The Sun Does Shine, I have it coming in the mail and I can't wait to read it…Kindred was excellent I loved it! Oh wow I'm reading The Vanishing Half right now and so far so good!! Great recommendations, my TBR just grew a bit more lol.
#blacklivesmatter
I’d advise getting the audio of the books you want to read. In summer you’ll want to be doing stuff and not sitting too long. I rely on Audiobooks so much. I can highly recommend
The Underground Railroad
Ghost Boys by Jewell Parker Rhodes is a great middle great book. Not entirely historical fiction, but brings in some historical events.
Americanah is fantastic! Very engaging and you learn a lot about what it means to be Black and an immigrant.
Have you read anything by James Baldwin? Fabulous author.
I have The Underground Railroad on my TBR and am looking to add others, so I am grateful for your list
I can’t believe that I still haven’t read Kindred. SMH. I need to get to it this year. Americanah is sooo good! And so is The Underground Railroad. It is a difficult read but I definitely enjoyed it. The Mothers was strange for me because of the narratoring but it was still good. I still need to read The Girl with the Louding Voice.
I told my sister she should read just mercy and the sun does shine. I got the vanishing half in my book of the month box this month and can’t wait to read it! Just have to wait for the library to get the audiobook so I can listen and read.
Thanks for these great recommendations. I will be adding some to my TBR. Let me know what you think of The Underground Railroad when you read it. I am hoping to read The Nickel Boys later this year.
