More About Afrofuturism: Afrofuturism is a cultural aesthetic, philosophy of science, and philosophy of history that explores the developing intersection of African Diaspora culture with technology. It was coined by Mark Dery in 1994 and explored in the late 1990s through conversations led by Alondra Nelson.Afrofuturism addresses themes and concerns of the African diaspora through technoculture and science fiction, encompassing a range of media and artists with a shared interest in envisioning black futures that stem from Afrodiasporic experiences. Seminal Afrofuturistic works include the novels of Samuel R. Delany and Octavia Butler; the canvases of Jean-Michel Basquiat and Angelbert Metoyer, and the photography of Renée Cox; the explicitly extraterrestrial mythoi of Parliament-Funkadelic, the Jonzun Crew, Warp 9, Deltron 3030, and Sun Ra; and the Marvel Comics superhero Black Panther

shout out to Syfy for featuring a video like this!
The Afrofuturism films we have now are nice, but I'm hoping for something more elaborate and unique. I know it can be done. We just need the right budget and director.
What' are some good afrofuturism novels to read?
LOVE LOVE LOVE THIS! Good to see props to the Queen Mother for REAL tho!
Looks like we're going to need more shelf space.
I only scrolled down to see just how many predictable troll comments I'd see….in 9 hours only 1 maybe there's hope for us as a society yet. Little disappointed you guys didn't put links for the books or authors you mentioned. But I'll just be proactive and look them up myself.
🖓🖓🖓🖓🖓 this video is nothing more than racist propaganda designed to alienate people. 'Oh look at all these black sci fi authors, we have to like them because they are black' is what this clip is saying. Don't get me wrong, I have enjoyed many of these films and books they mention, but I enjoy them based on quality not on skin color of characters or authors.
Love this. Also, that jean jacket is life affirming.
Awesome video! I'm reading the Autobiography of Malcolm X right now, but I think I'll finish out the month by finally jumping into the NK Jemison books I have.
