"Black books don't sell" so black authors self-publish (Fine Cut)

Last year, only 9% (319 out of 3500) of published children’s featured a black character, which is actually an increase from previous years; 5% in 2015 and 6% in 2016. Despite this growth, in this category are still having great difficulty getting published (3% in 2017). As a result, some have alternatively turned to self-publishing.

My family is very mixed and the characters in my book are based on my family. I insist on doing my own illustrations — I've been drawing all my life, but I heard that traditional publishing houses could chose the illustrator and if the writer doesn't let the publisher take the lead they don't get their book published. When they "negotiate", it's all about the writer taking orders from the publisher.

I'm an ordinary man with an extraordinary story but I don't fit the usual author's profile, see my link below why I didn't stop me going ahead with my current project

I'm 26 and I still feel like that first grader sometimes roaming through the library looking for any cover that had a black face.
