Great video. Afrofuturism can be pretty hard to define considering how vast it is, but you did a good job.
I recently read 'Parable of the Sower' by Octavia Butler which is a dystopian novel set in the near future. It shines light on issues like inequality and climate change.

I made a video essay about it a few days ago, so feel free to check out my channel if you want some more details.

The Deep sounds amazing, that's added straight to my TBR!

this was really informative! ive heard a lot of mixed reviews on binti but the deep sounds really cool. if i was to make a guess (and probably give too much credit) to white sci fi authors, perhaps many of them feel as though if they try and include parts of other cultures they will be accused of misrepresentation or appropriation? or maybe they just forget other cultures exist

I haven't read Binti yet but I read The Deep just last month and it was INCREDIBLE, not a day has gone by that I haven't thought about it in some way since then. Thank u for this video <3

I’ve not heard of Afrofuturism, but now it makes sense from your explanation. Thank you!

Loved this video! I remember learning about Afrofuturism in college, specifically when talking about and reading Octavia Butler, but I haven't read much since or on my own. Adding both to my list; they both look fascinating.

Even though I have read Binti (and like omg everyone should it was such a good book!), I honestly have never heard of "Afrofuturism" as a specific topic of conversation, so thank you for making this video! I've never heard of the Deep and it sounded very fascinating! I loved the discussion on how when we stop talking and forget a culture, we erase it.

I completely understand what you're saying. I feel like this last week has pushed me as well, at least in terms of reading. I don't think I can speak about these topics on my channel, but it has pushed me to desire to read more nonfiction books, for sure. As well as realizing that while I read a books by black authors, I do not tend to read books from other monitories and will do better in the future!

an incredible video with an incredible explanation of Afrofuturism! I'd like to recommend an incredible anthology "So Long Been Dreaming: Postcolonial Science Fiction and Fantasy", it's edited by Nalo Hopkinson and Uppinder Mehan. It's an amazing book to find new African, Asian, South Asian and Aboriginal authors, as well as North American and British Black authors!

@LiteratureScienceAlliance

The Deep is so good, I actually bought a hard back from version from an online store called sistah scifi. Also do you follow Njeri from Onxy Pages she reads primarily black speculative works and I find a lot of my afrofuturism reviews from her channel! Also reading Binti soon, its on the kindle so its gonna happen haha

I definitely need to read more of these! I LOVED the Binti series like I read all 3 in a week and you know how much I enjoyed it! I want more people to read it for sure and I hope now more people will!
The Deep is one I have been wanting to pick up for a while now but just haven't gotten to yet. I need to finally pick it up very soon!

I feel like I heard an episode of Song Exploder that talked with a songwriter/musician who made a song based on "The Deep" or maybe it was based on the same historical events. I was hoping I'd be able to easily find it but I couldn't. 🙁
Thanks for the recommendations. Definitely adding "The Deep" to my list of books I'd like to pick up

@Ramseyreadsandreviews

When I finish the Stand I am picking up Binti
